Wine Club Release Spring 2022
Things continue to change in the valley, some wineries are now owned by new entities, the vineyards planted around us are now harvesting and we continue to enjoy what we do. Being a quality, small producer selling to a limited audience at reasonable prices has been and remains our sole objective. We can't thank you enough for your support, loyalty, friendship, and good humor in our little endeavor.
Family Club Release (FC)- Two of our mainstays, the 2019 Time Won't Let Me and 2019 Heretic are finally ready for introduction. Some of our more esoteric wine projects have struck gold, and while small in production, we have enough to share with club. Our experimental wine for 2020 was an extended elevage pinot noir began in 2017; after 42 months in barrel, "E2" went to bottle. Now called Last Blend Standing, it defies reason. Another fun project, PMS, started in 2015, has taken on a life of its own; this Pinot-Malbec-Syrah estate blend is rapidly becoming a cult favorite - the 2018 version is great. We're a little light on whites this release, with the only wine being the 2020 Pale Rider; we do have lots of whites, pinks and sparklers available for substitution on the master list below.

Native Club Release (NC)- Two of our mainstays, the 2019 Time Won't Let Me and 2019 The Heretic are finally ready for introduction. The new 2020 Pale Rider (100% pinot noir - no skin contact) is kind of dazzling, and the 2019 The Jolly Rancher is in a wonderful place. We love both.

Plan Ahead - Climate change is real. Each year we seem to be shipping earlier in Spring, and later in Fall, to the warmer climate states. We used to be able to ship to Texas in mid-June, now we're lucky if we can make mid-May. Order your needs for summer now, ship it during the cool season, live large when the heat hits. If you need boat wines, beach wines, deck wines, patio wines, lake wines, etc., stock up now while we can ship to warmer climes with impunity. No one thinks about whites and rosés this time of year but think how cool and refreshing they'll be when it's 102F in July! Super summer picks are:
2016 Solstice Skies - Dry Riesling
2019 The Jolly Rancher Rosé
2020 Karsts of the Andaman - Pinot Blanc
2020 Ruby Primo - Secret Red Gem - It's a ruby not a rosé!
Tasting Great - For our bubbly fans, we have 3 different champagnes to choose. The 2014 Lussier is a pinot noir dosage, the 2014 Libertus is a pinot blanc dosage, and the 2014 Loertscher is a rosé dosage. All are spectacular. These all aged in tirage (secondary fermentation in the bottle) for SEVEN (7) years waiting to be finished. They are unlike any champagne or sparkling to be found on any retail shelf. Flavorful, textural, bold, with super fine bubble structure.
We also created a very small batch of reserve pinot blanc, called Loh Samah Bay (homework required). We have started fermenting pinot blanc in "cigar barrels", essentially a stretched, larger barrel of 300 liters. The results have been phenomenal. We didn't make much, but if you love white wine, add or sub some of this into your club order.
2013 Next Time is now a rocket ship. We've had a couple of bottles with friends at dinner, and it's a showstopper. We're down to about ten cases, and there are bottle limits per member. It is velvety and sumptuous, not a note out of place.
Jaguars from 2014, 2015 and 2016 are all purring contentedly. Big pinot glasses, soft rug, cuddle up in front of the fire.
Heretics from 2015 and 2016 are flexing their muscle. Need a steak? Feed one to a Heretic.
Logistics/Events - With Covid waning, life is beginning to normalize in Oregon. Our website appointment calendar opened March 1 and should stay that way until mid-November.
Housekeeping - As always, our list of available wines is organized by scarcity. The Endangered section features wines which are rapidly depleting but can still be acquired at humane prices. The Library allows you a limited reload on older favorites. Edge of Extinction means we have 10 or fewer cases remaining. We have a vastly expanded Large Format section which ships separately from the regular 750 ml bottles. The Pre-Release section is intended to let club members check out and stock up on new wines before general release. And, of course, the Recently Extinct list - those wonderful wines that now only reside in private cellars.
Remember our club basics - everyone gets to make changes if desired. If you want to make substitutions or additions, you need to communicate those changes via email to us by March 31; otherwise, you get the winemaker's pick detailed below. As a Family Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 15% and as a Native Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 10%. Please read this all the way to the end for useful details.
Winemaker's Picks
2019 "Time Won't Let Me" Estate Pinot Noir - $50 (FC & NC)
This vintage takes me back a couple of decades. 2019 was cooler than most of our recent years, with Fall arriving on August 30, without question! Harvest rains plumped grapes and prolonged flavor development. The vintage shows the most energy and vibrancy since 2013 and reminds me a great deal of 2007. The pinots are lively, almost dancing on the tongue. Fruits are more red than black, with nice red spice notes. Time will enhance this vintage just like the two aforementioned. A great pick for cellaring for 3-15 years.
2019 "Heretic" Estate Reserve Pinot Noir - $75 (FC & NC)
We drank one of these last night - the first in probably 6 months. I literally said "wow" out loud and involuntarily. Normally, the Heretic blocks produce this dark, brooding, muscular pinot - kind of a well-toned Joe Frazier-type heavyweight. The 2019 Heretic has the same power but is lighter on its feet with more finesse - more like a Mohammed Ali. The fruit is more cherry and raspberry than its usual blackberry and plum. The earthy notes, more fir and spruce than forest floor. The spice, more red than dark. It is structured, acid driven and super age worthy. Cellar up to 15+ years.
2020 "Pale Rider" Estate Blanc de Noir - $36 (FC & NC)
We started producing a white pinot from 100% pinot noir back in 2013. We're getting really good at it. This unique "white" offers the lighter aromatics and flavors in the peach, apricot and pear range, but maintains the viscosity and mouthfeel of a red. We poured this in February at a large Dallas Athletic Club dinner, and it was a huge hit. Each year we increase production of this gem, and each year more and more folks pick up the habit. It is a wonderfully versatile wine when it comes to food, running the gamut from quail and salad, to grilled meats. A must have for cocktail parties, summer events and afternoon sports watching. Cellar up to 7+ years.
2017 "Last Blend Standing" - Estate Extended Elevage Pinot Noir - $75 (FC)
Conventional wisdom has always claimed that Pinot Noir, unlike other great grapes (e.g., Cabernet, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese), cannot be aged for extended periods of time in barrel (It will spoil. It will flatten. It will have high VA... yada yada). Most Willamette Valley pinots spend 8-12 months in barrel; our norm is about 22. So, in 2017 we thought we'd try to break one more "rule" and push a small group of barrels beyond all reason. Last Blend Standing aged in barrel for 42 months! It worked, and it worked well. It is beautifully integrated, a touch opulent, dense, and luscious in mouth. We will be adding this heresy to our future wines on a regular basis. Cellar up to 15+ years.
2018 "PMS" Estate Red Blend - $50 (FC)
We've always been fans of Australia's GSM's. They are enchanting 3 red grape blends. Back in 2015, on a lark, we decided to blend pinot, malbec, and syrah (impossibly grown on our estate...more yada yada) into our very own 3 red blend. Unexpectedly, it was quite good. It has a pinot start, a malbec mid-palate and a syrah finish. With tongue in cheek, we had no choice but to call it P-M-S. Some of you now proclaim it as your favorite wine from Native Flora, which leaves me unsettled and a bit moody. This is a fun wine with a sense of humor. Drink with friends of a similar disposition. Cellar up to 15+ years.
2019 "The Jolly Rancher" - Estate Cult Rosé - $36 (NC)
One of our perennial club favorites, this will likely be the last of The Jolly Ranchers for quite some time. Starting later this year, I'm returning to the Strawberry Blonde rosé. The Rancher has always been our unique base wine of co-fermented pinot noir and pinot blanc, with a secondary floating ferment of malbec over the top. Until we can increase malbec production (not before 2023), PMS will have to take precedent over The Rancher. The Jolly Rancher still retains all of its melon and tropical notes, creamy yet bright mouthfeel, and long, lingering, hint-of-malbec finish. The 2019 is drinking beautifully this year. Cellar up to 5 years.
